Amendment of the Jury Act, to give women the right to be Jurors
1995
Amendment of the Constitution to make sex discrimination illegal.

Section 3 of the Mauritian Constitution stipulates the “fundamental” rights and freedom of the individual, provides that “….in Mauritius, there have existed and shall continue to exist without discrimination by reason of race, place of origin, political opinions, colour, creed or sex…”.

Section 16 which deals with “Protection from Discrimination” states under subsection (1) that “….. no law shall make any provision that is discriminatory either of itself or in its effect”.

Under Subsection (3), “discriminatory” means “….affording different treatment to different persons attributable wholly or mainly to their respective descriptions by race, caste, place of origin, colour, creed or sex”.



1997
Enactment of the Protection from Domestic Violence Act, making Mauritius the first country in the African Region to enact legislation to protect women from domestic violence (amended in 2004 & 2007)
 
Various pieces of labour legislation were amended to make better provisions for working women in the private and EPZ Sector , provide for better working conditions for pregnant women, as well as bring about uniformity of maternity leave.
 
It is to be noted that there has been a leap from 17.1% to 18.8% of women MPs in 2010.
