History of Water Resources Unit

The water resources unit was created in 1972. This sector is responsible for the assessment development, management of all water resources in Rodrigues. It operates under the aegis of the Commission of AGR/WRU of the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. The water a resource is comprises of three sections namely:-

• Section North
• Section South
• Central Section

Each section is headed by an Inspector who are responsible for all water aspects such as water distribution, maintenance of existing water net works, water treatment and chlorination, pipe laying and related civil works.


Description of sections

Section North

This sector covers the north eastern region of Rodrigues including Port Mathurin, Oyster Bay, English Bay, Terre Rouge, Grand Bay and vicinities

Sources of water

Two (2) borehole
Six(6) Intake dams

Water production

Surface 1,065m3/d

Under ground water 380m3/d

Section South

This sector cover the south westerly region of Rodrigues the following main villages La Ferme, Marechal, Plaine Corail Airport, Riviere Coco, Anse Raffin, Baie du Nord and vicinities.

Two (2) Bore holes
Two (2) dams (Anse Raffin dam)

Water Production

Surface water 575 m3/d

Underground water 134m3/d

Central Section

This sector covers the central region of Rodrigues with the following main villages Mount Lubin, Grande Montagne, Citronelle, Port Sud Est Mourouck, Petit Gabriel, Citron Donis, Malartic, Mte Charlot, Soupir, Roche Bon Dieu, Pte Coton and vicinities.

Our mission

To achieved an adequate and sustainable supply of water for the whole island at present and for the future requirements.

Activities

Investigation on water resources, collect, correlate and interpreter datas with regards to those resources such as borehole and springs
Prepare and implement plans for development and management of water resources for the construction of intake dams and ground water exploitation
Assess and give approval upon request for individual, industrial, agricultural water prise
Arrange for the operation, maintenance and safety of pumping station, chlorination plants and pressure filters
Provide a front desk service to ease water consumers to deliver their complaints
Provide surface and underground water to consumers
Provide facilities for chemical water analysis by a mini laboratory
To ensure the appropriate measures to be taken for the prevention of pollution of water resources

Mourouk pumping station


Anse Raffin Dam and water treatment plant with the following conditions subject that :-

Permission is granted within two (2) days of the receipt of a written requests subject to the acceptance of the following
The Commission of Water Resources shall not be liable for accident, injury, drowning which may occur during the visit.
That there is no littering at the dam and its surroundings so as to preserve the natural environment.
The request should indicate the timing of the visit, the number of persons as well as the registration number of vehicles.
